This chart summarizes the findings of a report completed in September 2008 by University of Rhode Island researchers at the request of the Aquarium of the Pacific. The researchers examined the degree of consensus in major seafood advisory programs, listing the categories that were in agreement for red, yellow, and green advisories. This is the usual method of sorting species for most seafood advisory programs, indicating those that should be avoided, regarded with caution, or recommended, respectively.
The University report also includes a “non-consensus” list. More than 150 fish categories were found to be on the non-consensus list due to the different ways in which each program chose to specify fish stocks. Note that Greenpeace has only a “red list,” while the SCA’s recommendations were converted to a “green list” equivalent. Some programs have an additional “gray list” for those species that lack information, and a “super green” or “super blue” list to indicate highly recommended species. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) recommends only certain fish stocks through a certification process, indicated by the blue dot below.
